Viewing and test drives

A practical checklist for your next car viewing

By CarTrak · · 2 min read

A viewing is your chance to find out whether a car suits you. Arrive with a few questions and take your time. If something is unclear, ask for an explanation before moving to the next step.

1.Confirm the details before travelling

Ask whether the car is still available, where you will meet and whether a test drive can be arranged. Confirm the variant and transmission so you do not travel to see a different specification. Save the listing link and note the questions you want answered.

2.Look at the car in person

Walk around the car and compare what you see with the photos and description. Check whether the seating, visibility and boot space suit your needs. Try the features you use regularly, including the air conditioning, windows and infotainment controls.

3.Use the test drive to ask questions

With the owner or representative’s permission, drive on a suitable route and follow local road rules. Notice how comfortable you feel with the steering, brakes, gear changes and parking. Mention unfamiliar sounds or behaviour and ask for them to be checked rather than guessing what they mean.

4.Review your notes before deciding

Write down what you liked and what needs clarification. Ask what an inspection covered and which concerns remain open. If you want a mechanic’s assessment, arrange that before committing. A short drive is only one part of assessing a used car.
