Paperwork Q&A
Used-car RC transfer in Tamil Nadu: common questions answered
By CarTrak · · 3 min read
A clear car deal includes a clear paperwork plan. For Erode and other Tamil Nadu buyers, these answers explain what to ask before handover using official Parivahan guidance checked on 26 October 2026. Confirm the requirements for your particular transaction with the relevant registering authority.

1.Which forms apply to an ordinary used-car sale?
Parivahan lists Form 29 for reporting the sale and Form 30 for the ownership-transfer application. Ask who will prepare and submit them. Keep a transaction-specific checklist and copies of the submitted paperwork.
2.Which documents should I ask to see?
The official ownership-transfer list includes the registration and insurance certificates. Additional documents depend on the state and transaction. Confirm the current RTO checklist rather than treating a general list as complete.
3.What if the RC still shows vehicle finance?
Ask for the financier’s clearance and the plan for updating the RC. Parivahan’s hypothecation-termination guidance describes Form 35 signed by the registered owner and financier, plus clearance documentation. A verbal statement that the loan is paid does not confirm that the RC entry has been updated.
4.Is handing over the keys proof that the transfer is complete?
Keep the submission acknowledgement or application reference and follow the application until the registration record shows the completed change. Agree who will follow up. Do not assume that payment or possession alone confirms completion, and do not rely on an unverified processing-time promise.
